Destroyer God and Tourism Ambassador! Tokyo Shinjuku Ward's "Furusato Nozei" Collaborates with "Godzilla" for Special Tax Donation Rewards

Previously, we introduced news about Japan's "Furusato Nozei" (故鄉稅), where hometowns typically offer gifts as a token of appreciation, mostly local specialties or unique products. However, recently, more and more local governments are choosing to collaborate with anime and manga IPs, allowing taxpayers to receive related limited-edition merchandise, which has led to stable growth in tax revenue.

Today (October 1st), Tokyo's Shinjuku Ward officially announced a collaboration with "Godzilla," which celebrates its 70th anniversary this year, launching a joint Furusato Nozei reward project. This initiative allows all citizens supporting Shinjuku Ward to receive exclusive Godzilla-themed rewards. Upon its release, it sparked considerable discussion among netizens, marveling at the Destroyer God taking on such a role XD.

In fact, as early as 2015, "Godzilla" officially became Shinjuku Ward's official tourism ambassador. At that time, a 12-meter-tall Godzilla head giant landscape installation was also set up on the 8th floor of the Shinjuku Toho Building in Kabukicho, serving as a local promotion for the ambassador.

Regarding the highly anticipated Furusato Nozei rewards, Shinjuku Ward's distinctive "dyed fabrics," one of the three major dyeing production areas alongside Kyoto and Kanazawa, are featured. Items such as kimonos, yukatas, wallets, and tote bags can be exclusively obtained through specific Furusato Nozei donations. Of course, there are also printed Godzilla rewards, including posters, planners, and more, all exclusive collectibles.

Naturally, such an event is bound to attract many citizens to support the local Furusato Nozei. It also demonstrates how actively Japanese localities are promoting these collaborative projects, with remarkable results. Perhaps this approach can make more people feel that paying taxes to the government offers a more tangible return.
