20th Century Studios President Steve Asbell recently confirmed that a sequel to the critically acclaimed 2024 film "Alien: Romulus," the seventh installment in the "Alien" franchise, is officially in development. Stars Cailee Spaeny and David Jonsson are set to reprise their roles on the big screen.
Asbell revealed that "Alien: Romulus" was initially not slated for a theatrical release. Developed during the COVID-19 pandemic, its distribution strategy—whether theatrical or streaming—remained uncertain, leading to a more conservative budget. Fortunately, as the cinema market recovered, the film was ultimately greenlit for a big-screen debut.
Two 'Predator' Sequels in the Works
Beyond the "Alien: Romulus" sequel, Steve Asbell also disclosed that two new films in the "Predator" franchise are slated for 2025.
One of these, titled "Badlands," is a sci-fi feature set in the future and stars Elle Fanning ("Super 8"). It has already wrapped production in New Zealand. The second project remains under wraps. Both films will be directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who helmed "Prey."
'Kingsman,' 'Free Guy,' and More Sequels?
In a separate interview with an international media outlet, Asbell also stated that there are currently no plans for any sequels or prequels in the spy action-comedy "Kingsman" franchise.
Meanwhile, the previously confirmed sequel to "Free Guy" has yet to set a production start date. Given the busy schedules of star Ryan Reynolds and director Shawn Levy, development will only move forward once their availability aligns.
Asbell also mentioned that a prequel to "Master and Commander" has a strong script ready and is simply awaiting the right director. However, there's no new information regarding a potential sequel for the "Die Hard" franchise.
