Danny Boyle, director of the original "28 Days Later," returns to helm "28 Years Later," the third installment in the acclaimed zombie horror franchise and the first chapter in a brand-new sequel trilogy. Alex Garland, who penned the original, is solely responsible for writing the entire new trilogy.
The new cast additions for this installment include Jodie Comer, Ralph Fiennes, Jack O'Connell, Erin Kellyman, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. Oscar winner Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original film, also returns to act and executive produce. However, reports suggest his role in the third and fourth films will be limited, with his character expected to take center stage again in the fifth installment.

All three films in the new trilogy will carry the "28 Years" title. The third installment is slated for release in North America on June 20 next year. The fourth film, "28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple," does not yet have a release date but has already wrapped production, with "The Marvels" director Nia DaCosta at the helm.
The three sequels reportedly have an average budget of $75 million. Notably, the third film was shot entirely on an iPhone 15, making it the most expensive feature film ever to be filmed entirely with a smartphone.

In a recent interview with "IndieWire," Fiennes offered a glimpse into the film's plot, stating that the story is set 28 years after a devastating plague ravaged the UK, leaving behind hordes of violent, frenzied infected, with only a few isolated areas remaining safe. He explained that the film centers on a young boy who embarks on a journey to find a doctor for his dying mother. The boy guides his mother through the picturesque landscapes of northern England, surrounded by infected in the hills and woods. Fiennes added that the boy eventually finds a doctor, who, while initially appearing eccentric, proves to be kind-hearted.
Meanwhile, Sony Pictures' official synopsis, released alongside the trailer, provides additional plot details: the virus has found a way to survive within the infected. A group of survivors lives on an island connected to the mainland by a heavily guarded causeway. One day, a survivor leaves the island for a mission into the dark heart of the mainland, where they uncover secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated not only the infected but also the survivors themselves.
