Sony Pictures has unveiled major updates for two of its prominent film franchises today. First up is the "28 Days Later" sequel, "28 Years Later," which recently dropped its first trailer. While earlier rumors suggested the fourth film would be titled "28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple," Sony has now confirmed the official title as "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," dropping the "Part II" designation.
Sony has also slated "The Bone Temple" for a January 16, 2026 release, placing it just six months after the third installment, "28 Years Later," which is due out on June 20, 2025. Danny Boyle, director of the original "28 Days Later," returns to direct the third film, while "The Marvels" helmer Nia DaCosta is set to direct the fourth. Details regarding a potential fifth installment, including its title and director, remain under wraps.

Meanwhile, the "Ghostbusters" franchise is also expanding its animated slate. Deadline reports that Netflix, which partnered with Sony two years ago to develop a new "Ghostbusters" animated series, is now deepening that collaboration to co-produce an animated "Ghostbusters" feature film. Kris Pearn, known for directing "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2," has been tapped to helm the project.
Sources indicate that both Sony and Netflix aim for this animated feature to revitalize the "Ghostbusters" IP, much like "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" did for its franchise. This isn't Sony's first foray into a "Ghostbusters" animated movie announcement. Two years prior, the studio revealed plans for an animated feature to be co-directed by Jennifer Kluska (co-director of "Hotel Transylvania: Transformania") and Chris Prynoski (producer of "The Boys Presents: Diabolical"). It remains unclear whether that previously announced project is still in active development or if it has evolved into the current Netflix collaboration.
