Acclaimed filmmaker Martin Scorsese, known for juggling multiple projects, has seen several films languish in development hell or progress slowly over the years. Among them is the novel adaptation "The Devil in the White City." Scorsese's frequent collaborator, Leonardo DiCaprio, acquired the screen rights to the original book back in 2010, and while casting and script development have been ongoing intermittently, the project has repeatedly fallen apart due to various factors.

DiCaprio and Scorsese had even considered abandoning the feature film format, opting instead to develop it as a Hulu series. Three years ago, Keanu Reeves was tapped to star, but Reeves ultimately exited the project, causing the entire plan to enter a prolonged hiatus.

However, according to the latest reports from Deadline, "The Devil in the White City" has now been revived as a feature film adaptation. 20th Century Studios, part of the Disney ecosystem alongside Hulu, will take over production, with DiCaprio set to star and Scorsese still attached to direct. Years ago, DiCaprio had initially planned to portray the serial killer H.H. Holmes but later stepped back to serve solely as a producer. Now, with his return to a starring role, Deadline did not specify which character he will play.

"The Devil in the White City" is set against the backdrop of the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, where architect Daniel Burnham, through sheer effort and talent, created an unprecedented fairground for the host city. Simultaneously, serial killer H.H. Holmes committed multiple crimes during the exposition, intertwining the fates of the two men in a bizarre way. Reeves was originally slated to play Daniel; with his departure, it remains to be seen which role DiCaprio will choose. Deadline also noted that "The Devil in the White City" currently lacks a finalized script, suggesting another significant period of pre-production may be ahead.
