Chiba Institute of Technology's "Rugby Robot" Goes Viral, Its Creepy Movement Freaks Out Netizens

A new robot from Chiba Institute of Technology (CIT), shaped uncannily like a rugby ball, has exploded online, racking up over 2 million views on Twitter (now X) in a flash. Its unsettling design and eerie sounds have left many netizens "scared their legs went weak," with some jokingly exclaiming, "If that thing rolled down the hallway towards me, I'd absolutely lose it!"

Developed by CIT's Department of Future Robotics (@robo_cit), this elongated, rugby-esque bot is remotely controlled to roll and move. While its appearance is simple, its slow, creeping movement delivers a powerful visual punch, making it look like some unidentified object from an unknown realm.

Adding to the unease, the robot emits piercing "beep-beep" and "whoosh-whoosh" sounds when operating, as if some otherworldly creature is whispering, further amplifying the overall eerie vibe. The design makes you wonder: "Is it going to suddenly explode?"

After the official account shared the robot's video, it sparked heated discussion. Many netizens commented, "This would be super effective as a security robot!" and "Perfect for a haunted house!" Some even suggested, "If it were painted with Musou Black, the horror factor would double!"

Anime fans also quickly noticed the robot's striking resemblance to "Buster Machine 3" from the final battle in the anime "Gunbuster" (Top wo Nerae!). Comments poured in, asking, "Could this be the prototype for Buster Machine 3?"
