Most of you are probably no stranger to sushi. This iconic Japanese delicacy, though seemingly simple with just rice and toppings, transforms into countless variations, even evolving into different styles when it travels abroad. It's truly one of Japan's most representative foods.
But have you ever heard of "Trout Sushi" (Masu Sushi)? This regional specialty from Japan's Toyama Prefecture is a world apart from your average sushi. Just yesterday (March 22), the region hosted a challenge to create the "World's Largest Trout Sushi," and with collective effort, they pulled off this monumental feat! Measuring a jaw-dropping 3.23 meters in diameter, its incredible scale has become a hot topic among Japanese netizens.

Legend has it that "Trout Sushi" (Masu Sushi) originated in Kyoho 2 (1717), initially made with premium Etchu rice and ayu fish from the Jinzu River. When Lord Maeda Toshioki presented this sushi to the Eighth Shogun Yoshimune, even the notoriously discerning shogun was reportedly amazed by its deliciousness.
Later, people began using trout to make the sushi, and it gradually gained popularity as a local delicacy. Its unique preparation involves lining a round container with bamboo leaves, then layering it with salt-cured trout fillets and vinegared rice, pressing it firmly. The whole thing is then wrapped in bamboo leaves and weighted down. Today, this specialty is ubiquitous in Toyama Prefecture, making it a must-try for any visitor.

This isn't Toyama Prefecture's first rodeo; they actually attempted the world's largest back in 2014. This time, they rallied master chefs to break their own record.

The creation process was incredibly elaborate, akin to making a pizza. The giant trout sushi was assembled from 12 individual sections, each roughly 20 times the size of a regular portion. These 12 massive pieces were then brought together to complete the colossal dish.

Just watching the video, you can tell how much effort went into each individual section.
The finished product of this challenge was a super-giant trout sushi with a diameter of 3.23 meters! Its creation required approximately 100 kg of vinegared rice, 50 kg of trout, and nearly 900 bamboo leaves for wrapping. Just one layer of this behemoth could make over 300 regular Masu Sushi! Truly a sight to behold.
Just look at that insane size! It had countless Japanese netizens practically drooling.

Of course, this was also a promotional event for the region. So, if you ever find yourself traveling to Toyama Prefecture in the future, don't miss out on this local delicacy!
