Ben Stiller, the comedy star who has seen a career resurgence directing the critically acclaimed Apple TV+ series "Severance," is set to direct a new feature film adaptation of "The Twilight Zone," according to an exclusive report from veteran film reporter Jeff Sneider on his blog, The InSneider.

The iconic anthology series, known for its blend of supernatural elements and standalone short stories, has been a television staple for decades, with new iterations emerging every few years. The most recent revival was produced by "Get Out" director Jordan Peele, which premiered in 2019 but was canceled after just two seasons.

In 1983, Warner Bros. Pictures famously brought together four iconic genre directors—Joe Dante, George Miller, John Landis, and Steven Spielberg—to create an anthology feature film. However, the production was marred by a tragic on-set helicopter crash that killed one adult actor and two child actors. Despite its box office success, the incident cast a long shadow over the film. In the 21st century, Warner Bros. began exploring the idea of a new cinematic installment.

For fans who have been following the project's development, it's no secret that Leonardo DiCaprio's production company, Appian Way, has been working with Warner Bros. to develop a new "The Twilight Zone" feature for the past 15 years.

Over the years, several high-profile directors have been attached to the project, including "The Batman" director Matt Reeves and "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski. Stiller is the latest filmmaker to take on the challenge.

Stiller's take will reportedly diverge from the 1983 anthology format, focusing on a single narrative. One long-gestating script idea at Warner Bros. involves a fighter pilot who accidentally time-travels 125 years into the future while testing the first-ever light-speed rocket. However, it remains uncertain if this concept will be used, as the project is currently listed as an "open writing assignment" (OWA), allowing incoming writers to pitch entirely new concepts.

However, "The Twilight Zone" is unlikely to be Stiller's immediate next project. His schedule is packed with preparing for the third season of "Severance" and a return to acting this fall for the fourth installment of the "Meet the Parents" franchise.
