Zoe Saldaña, renowned for her starring roles in blockbuster franchises like "Avatar," saw her career reach new heights last year. She first earned the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival for "Emilia Pérez," and subsequently, this year, won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for the same film. This month, Saldaña is set to return to audiences with the upcoming Pixar animated film "Elio," for which she lends her voice. While promoting "Elio" in an interview with People magazine, Saldaña couldn't hide her excitement about owning an Oscar statuette.

When the People interviewer asked Saldaña where she keeps her Oscar, Saldaña replied, "It's in my office, and its gender is fluid, it's transgender, so call it 'they/them.'" Saldaña specifically emphasized gender fluidity because the protagonist of "Emilia Pérez" is a transgender individual who undergoes sex reassignment surgery.

Following the publication of this interview, Saldaña became the subject of ridicule for many netizens, who accused her of spouting nonsense, lacking basic common sense, and gratuitously injecting gender politics, thereby adding another layer of controversy to an already contentious film.
