Just last month, Nic Pizzolatto (pictured left), the creator behind the first three seasons of HBO's anthology series "True Detective," revealed he had been discussing with Matthew McConaughey, one of the stars of the acclaimed first season, how to extend that initial storyline. Today, however, Deadline exclusively broke news of another major crime-genre project brewing between Pizzolatto and McConaughey.

According to Deadline, Pizzolatto is currently penning a film centered on the legendary American literary private detective, Mike Hammer, with McConaughey in negotiations to star. Skydance Media has already acquired the adaptation rights to the extensive Mike Hammer novel series, ensuring ample material for potential sequels should the first film prove successful.

Mike Hammer is the iconic detective character created by the late crime fiction master Mickey Spillane, first introduced in Spillane's 1947 debut novel, "I, the Jury." The character subsequently appeared in over a dozen sequels. Hammer has been a frequent subject of adaptation since 1953, featuring in numerous films, television series, radio dramas, and even comic book adaptations, permeating various facets of popular culture. Now, McConaughey is poised to become the latest actor to embody the hard-boiled detective.
