PlayStation Reportedly Eyeing Warner Bros. Games Acquisition; 'Mortal Kombat' and DC Universe Could Join Sony's Ranks

Following Warner Bros. Discovery's announcement that it would split the company in two, a major acquisition rumor has begun swirling in the gaming industry. According to a report from SEScoops, Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE) is potentially interested in acquiring Warner Bros.' gaming division, a move that would bring blockbuster IPs like "Mortal Kombat," the DC Universe, and "Harry Potter" into the PlayStation family.

SIE already boasts a formidable first-party lineup, featuring acclaimed titles such as "God of War," "Marvel's Spider-Man," "Horizon," and "Ratchet & Clank." However, with Xbox aggressively expanding its content library through major acquisitions in recent years, absorbing WB's established brands would undoubtedly give PlayStation a massive competitive boost.

Currently, WB Games is undergoing an internal restructuring. Following the disappointing performance of "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League" and the cancellation of a new "Wonder Woman" title, Warner has divided its gaming operations into two main sectors.

Shaun Himmerick of NetherRealm Studios will now oversee the future of "Mortal Kombat" and DC games, while former Bethesda lead Yves Lachance has taken charge of the Montréal studio to manage new projects based on "A Song of Ice and Fire" and "Harry Potter."

The report suggests SIE is interested in Warner's "Streaming and Studios" division, which encompasses both its film and television content as well as its gaming assets. However, the deal has not been officially confirmed, and whether it will ultimately materialize remains uncertain.

If the acquisition were to proceed, SIE would have the opportunity to bring Rocksteady's next Batman game, the rumored "Injustice 3," and the sequel to "Hogwarts Legacy" into the PlayStation fold. These globally recognized IPs would be a powerful magnet for attracting a massive player base to the SIE ecosystem.

This potential move comes as Microsoft continues to fortify its Xbox lineup with the successful acquisitions of major publishers like Bethesda and Activision Blizzard. Should SIE manage to secure Warner's popular gaming brands, it would mark a critical turning point in the next phase of competition in the games industry.
