A collection of concept art for a canceled game, codenamed "Project Sabbath," recently surfaced on ArtStation, seemingly revealing early designs for what was intended to be a sequel to "Batman: Arkham Knight."
Developed by WB Games Montreal, "Project Sabbath" centered on a "dual Batman" concept, featuring Bruce Wayne and his son, Damian Wayne. This vision was reportedly considered a core plan for Warner Bros.' next major Batman game.
While it's not officially confirmed if "Project Sabbath" was intended to be part of the Rocksteady Studios-led "Arkhamverse," given that WB Games Montreal previously developed "Batman: Arkham Origins," a prequel to the original trilogy, it's highly probable this project was an extension of the series.
Notably, the elderly Bruce Wayne design seen in the "Project Sabbath" concept art somewhat echoes a Damian Wayne Batsuit design that surfaced in 2021. Though his face wasn't revealed at the time, it suggested he would still be suiting up.
Of course, as is well-known, "Project Sabbath" ultimately never saw the light of day. WB Games Montreal instead shifted focus to "Gotham Knights," a game released in 2022 that notably featured no Batman and received poor reviews. Rocksteady, meanwhile, ventured into the multiplayer co-op space with "Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League," which, despite its purported ties to the Arkhamverse, ultimately failed to gain market traction.
By late 2024, WB Games Montreal had laid off nearly a hundred employees and reportedly ceased large-scale project development. Meanwhile, reports indicate that Rocksteady is currently redeveloping a new single-player Batman game, sparking player anticipation for a potential story featuring Bruce and Damian fighting side-by-side.
While "Project Sabbath" never came to fruition, these concept images offer a valuable glimpse, proving that this "dual Batman" chapter once genuinely existed and further fueling excitement for the next Batman game that can restore the Dark Knight's glory.
