"Tron: Legacy" director Joseph Kosinski is currently on a promotional tour for his new film, "F1." As the director of "Top Gun: Maverick," he was naturally asked about the progress of the third installment during recent interviews. While Kosinski couldn't reveal too many plot details due to confidentiality, he did offer a hint in a newly published "GQ" magazine interview.

Kosinski teased, "I think we've found a way to break through, not just in terms of the scale we're building, but also in the story itself. We're thinking on a broader level... Maverick in the third film will face a true existential crisis, one far greater than himself. In fact... I have to try to describe it without giving anything away (laughs), but it's an existential problem Maverick has to confront, and I think compared to the themes we want to discuss, Maverick will seem relatively small in the film."

Kosinski continued, "Maverick still has more stories to tell, he has one last mile to go. We are currently working on the concept, and 'F1' screenwriter Ehren Kruger is writing the script. And like all things, development takes time; we'll only move forward with production when we feel the story is compelling enough."

Given that "F1" star Brad Pitt recently expressed his willingness to collaborate with Tom Cruise again, Kosinski—who has directed both actors—was asked if he would be interested in helming a film starring both of them. He proposed, "Right now, I'd probably want to do Cole Trickle, who is Cruise's character in 'Days of Thunder.' Maybe we'd find out that he and Sonny Hayes (Pitt's character in 'F1') have a past, that they were rivals, or even crossed paths... I heard Brad and Tom had an epic go-kart battle during the filming of 'Interview with the Vampire.' Who wouldn't pay to see those two go head-to-head on the track?"
