Netflix's globally acclaimed Korean series "Squid Game" officially launched its third season yesterday, immediately reigniting a phenomenal binge-watching frenzy. The most shocking revelation of the season, however, was Oscar winner Cate Blanchett's cameo as a "game recruiter" in the finale, setting the stage for future storylines. Blanchett's appearance effectively confirms the long-rumored U.S. version of "Squid Game" is indeed happening. More accurately, it's not a remake but a spin-off sequel.

It's widely known that before its release, officials had promoted Season 3 as the series finale. However, Season 3 merely concludes the Korean storyline. As teased in the season's closing moments, the narrative will now shift to Los Angeles, California. Furthermore, for the past two years, rumors have persisted that director David Fincher, who has a long-standing partnership with Netflix, had already joined the production of the "Squid Game" U.S. spin-off. Blanchett previously collaborated with Fincher on "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," making it highly probable that he facilitated her involvement.

Director Hwang Dong-hyuk (황동혁), who helmed all three seasons of "Squid Game," admitted in an interview that the U.S. spin-off plan had indeed been quietly in the works for a long time, and Blanchett's cameo was kept under wraps for an extended period. However, he did not specify whether Blanchett would return for more scenes, similar to Gong Yoo (공지철). Regarding the start of production for the U.S. series, the Netflix-tracking website What's on Netflix reports that filming is expected to commence this December, also in Los Angeles.
