The classic 90s animated television series "Captain Planet and the Planeteers" has been a target for Hollywood live-action and animated feature film adaptations almost since its original broadcast. However, these efforts have consistently faced hurdles, with several creative teams and studios attempting to push projects forward, only to see them fall apart.
The most recent attempt began in 2016, with Leonardo DiCaprio and his production company, Appian Way Productions, partnering with Paramount Pictures to develop a feature film. "Top Gun: Maverick" star Glen Powell, known for his role as "Hangman", was attached to lead the project and co-write the script. However, Powell's version has apparently been scrapped, as DiCaprio has now shifted gears, moving the project to a different studio and opting for a series format instead of a feature film.

Deadline exclusively reported today that DiCaprio has brought the live-action "Captain Planet" project to Netflix for development. Greg Berlanti, producer of the DC "Arrowverse" series, has also joined the production through his company, Berlanti Productions. Tara Hernandez, co-creator and showrunner of the Peacock series "Mrs. Davis," has been hired as the writer for the new adaptation. Deadline further confirmed that Powell is no longer involved in the series production.
