Three years ago, acclaimed crime director Michael Mann published a novel prequel/sequel to his classic masterpiece "Heat," which garnered significant praise and strong sales. The positive reception prompted Mann and Warner Bros. to begin discussions about adapting the book into a film. However, three years later, despite casting rumors surfacing at one point, there has been little significant progress, and the project has yet to be officially greenlit for production.

The latest reports indicate that Mann's initial budget proposal to Warner Bros. exceeded $200 million, which the studio rejected. Even after Mann reduced it to $170 million, Warner Bros. still considered the cost too high. Warner Bros. CEOs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy remain committed to the sequel, but they are seeking other companies to co-finance the production and share the financial risk.
Apple has reportedly received the sequel's script and is currently evaluating co-financing the project. Furthermore, Leonardo DiCaprio is in negotiations to star. Should DiCaprio sign on, it would significantly boost investment interest from both Warner Bros. and Apple, as studios are typically more confident with a globally recognized box office draw leading the cast.

The novel "Heat 2" features two intertwining timelines. One picks up a day after the original film, following Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) as he continues his pursuit of the escaped Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer). The other storyline delves seven years prior to the first film, chronicling other heists carried out by Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro), Shiherlis, and their crew, while Hanna is tracking a different fugitive. These seemingly disparate narratives ultimately converge in an unexpected, fated confrontation seven years later.
