Marvel's "Marvel Zombies" Series Lands Early Disney+ Premiere, Originally Conceived as a Feature Film

Marvel Animation's "Marvel Zombies," a highly anticipated spin-off from "What If...?", is set to premiere earlier than expected, hitting Disney+ on September 24, 2025. This new date is ahead of its previously announced October 3 release. The news was exclusively reported by Collider, which also revealed that the project was initially developed as a full-length feature film.

Showrunner and director Bryan Andrews shared in an interview that the team originally aimed to produce a complete movie. However, due to various production and planning challenges, the story was ultimately divided into a four-episode series. Andrews described the final product as "a movie broken into four parts," emphasizing its continuous narrative and action-packed, thrilling sequences.

"Marvel Zombies" garnered attention upon its initial announcement for receiving a TV-MA rating, placing it in the same category as "Daredevil: Born Again." Andrews clarified that while the series features "only a few key scenes with strong language," the rating primarily stems from its intense violence and gore.

He stressed, "We wanted the audience to actually see the blood, not just imply it." The series was completed before "Deadpool & Wolverine" prompted the MCU to relax its language restrictions, thus maintaining a more restrained approach to dialogue.

While the zombie genre may not command the same fervor it did during "The Walking Dead"'s peak, Marvel previously showcased a fresh take on the concept in "What If...?", pitting the Avengers against zombified heroes. The upcoming series will expand on that universe, delivering a cohesive and high-stakes survival narrative.

The star-studded voice cast includes Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch, Awkwafina as Katy, David Harbour as Red Guardian, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, Randall Park as Jimmy Woo, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, Hailee Steinfeld as Hawkeye, Dominique Thorne as Ironheart, Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, and Hudson Thames as Spider-Man.
