Nia DaCosta Breaks Down "The Marvels" Box Office Flop: Director Blames "Not Solid" Script for Sequel's Failure

Despite receiving some positive reviews, "The Marvels," released in 2023, ultimately grossed just over $200 million worldwide, marking the lowest box office performance in Marvel Studios' history. In stark contrast, the first installment, "Captain Marvel," surpassed $1 billion in 2019, making the significant disparity between the two films particularly notable.

Recently, director Nia DaCosta candidly stated in an interview that the core reason for the sequel's failure was an insufficiently solid script.

DaCosta, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter (THR), discussed her upcoming directorial project, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple," and used it to contrast her experience filming "The Marvels." She stated directly:

"The problem I had on 'Candyman' and 'The Marvels' was that the scripts weren't solid. That makes the whole process chaotic. Whereas with Alex Garland, when he hands you a script, you're like, 'This is great,' and you barely have to change anything."

She further noted that during the production of "The Marvels," she did have the freedom to select some cast members and locations, but the collaborative process with the production team differed significantly from her ideal creative approach.

Earlier this year, in another interview with Deadline, DaCosta also admitted that the theatrical cut differed significantly from her original filmed version.

"At some point, I realized this isn't the movie I pitched, and it's not even the first cut I made. So I just took it as a learning experience, to help me be stronger, and learn how to navigate these situations."

"The Marvels" continues the story from the first film, following Captain Carol Danvers as she reclaims her identity and defeats the Supreme Intelligence. An unforeseen event causes instability in the universe. When her mission involves a wormhole connected to Kree revolutionaries, her powers become entangled with those of Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) and her niece Monica Rambeau. The trio must team up to save the universe.
