"Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight," officially unveiled at Gamescom 2025, has become a major talking point among players. Breaking from the Lego series' tradition of offering hundreds of unlockable characters, the new title confirms only seven playable hero characters and no villains, a significant change that immediately sparked intense community debate.
According to the official FAQ page, the seven playable characters are Batman, Jim Gordon, Robin, Nightwing, Batgirl, Catwoman, and Talia al Ghul. Each possesses unique skills and weapons; for instance, Batman wields his Batarang, Gordon is equipped with a foam blaster, and Robin utilizes a grappling gun, offering diverse combat experiences.
The development team emphasized their goal is to "focus more on the core story of Batman and the Bat-Family," rather than simply relying on a massive character roster.
Jonathan Smith, Production Director at TT Games, stated in an interview with IGN that the team aimed to "fully present Bruce Wayne's journey and the atmosphere of Gotham City," leading to a reduced character list to create a more detailed and story-driven experience.
While the number of playable characters is limited, players can still unlock various costumes to experience Batman's looks across different eras, from the 2022 "The Batman" film to classic Golden Age versions, and even Easter eggs like "Rainbow Batman."
Other DC characters, such as Bat-Mite and Condiment King, will still appear in the game but only as non-playable NPCs. Smith also confirmed that Superman and Peacemaker will not be featured, and he offered "no comment" regarding Harley Quinn and other characters.
This change quickly sparked controversy online. Some players criticized that "the fun of Lego games is collecting and controlling a large number of characters," with others bluntly stating they "wouldn't buy it with only seven characters."
However, there were also voices of support, arguing that "seven distinct characters offer more depth than two hundred characters with only cosmetic differences," suggesting this could lead to more unique gameplay modes.
▼Some players speculated that the seven playable characters might refer specifically to those controllable within the story mode.
▼Other players expressed disappointment over the limitation to just seven playable characters.
▼Renowned YouTuber "Blitzwinger" noted that "Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight" currently has over 30 newly revealed characters.
"Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight" is slated for release on Nintendo Switch 2, PC (via Steam and Epic), PS5, and Xbox Series X|S. Whether this story-focused approach will successfully break from tradition or sacrifice the series' core appeal remains to be seen upon its launch.
