Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight's Rainbow Suit Sparks "Woke" Backlash – But It Predates the Rainbow Flag by Decades

As "Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight" continues to unveil new details, many players are eagerly anticipating the game's release. However, the "Rainbow Batman" suit, set to appear in the game, recently sparked controversy, with some netizens criticizing it as a "woke" design.

This particular costume, however, actually debuted in DC Comics back in 1957, predating the LGBTQ+ community's rainbow flag by 21 years, and is unrelated to modern "political correctness."

The news originated from a screenshot of the game's costume selection menu shared by "Lego Game News." The image showcased several classic outfits, alongside a vibrant "Rainbow Batman" suit. A caption beneath the screenshot explained the suit's historical origins, noting its first appearance in a 1957 comic.

According to the original comic lore, Batman donned this colorful ensemble because his partner, the original Robin, Dick Grayson, had broken his arm and was temporarily sidelined. To prevent enemies and the public from connecting Robin's absence with his injury, Batman chose the Rainbow Suit to distract attention, effectively covering up the void. This "absurd yet clever" arrangement is considered a classic moment by comic fans.

However, some netizens, unaware of the historical context, criticized the game as "woke" without reading the explanation, even threatening that it would impact sales. Most fans, however, viewed the inclusion of such an obscure Easter egg in the game as a pleasant surprise for long-time players.

▼ "Lego Batman is going politically correct."

▼ "You have so many Batman suits to choose from, but you put the rainbow suit in the third slot. I've removed your game from my wishlist again, good luck."

▼ "Back in my day, Lego bricks weren't political; they just hurt when you stepped on them."

Notably, "Legacy of the Dark Knight" isn't just incorporating elements from films; it also plans to extend its scope to the "Batman: Arkham" game series. DC even conducted a poll asking players which era of Batman history they most wished to revisit. The results showed that over half of the players hoped to return to the "Arkhamverse," demonstrating the series' enduring influence.

With the game's release date yet to be announced, the Rainbow Batman suit controversy is likely just one of many topics surrounding it. However, ultimately, this classic suit—which predates the rainbow flag—has not diminished the game's appeal; rather, it may become a major highlight for attracting core fans.
