While filming "Spider-Man: Brand New Day", Tom Holland took a break to dive into a different, non-superhero project: a new short film titled "Never Stop Playing," produced by the LEGO Group. The short not only showcases Holland's versatile acting but also delivers an important message about "the spirit of play."
The two-minute short film combines live-action and LEGO animation and was designed to address the growing pressure on children to "grow up" too quickly.
In the film, Holland plays multiple roles, from a space marine, a soccer player, an inventor, and an artist, to a LEGO minifigure, a young child, an elderly person, and even a grumpy executive. As the story unfolds, each character, empowered by LEGO, re-embraces creativity and playfulness, echoing the film's title, "Never Stop Playing."
In an interview, Holland admitted that the value of play is very real for him. He stated that he has ADHD and dyslexia, and sometimes a blank page can be overwhelming. However, when he has to solve problems creatively, whether following instructions or not, it keeps his mind agile and fosters positive creativity.
Beyond his acting career, Holland's "play" extends into his daily life. He enjoys golf, padel tennis, and even plays online chess with his brother, Harry Holland. He also recalled his childhood connection with LEGO, remembering how his parents would often hold "room tidying competitions." The winner would be excused from washing dishes, and he would cleverly use his LEGO dinosaur sets to earn extra points for his room, creating lasting memories.
For this short film, Holland's brothers, Harry and Sam Holland, also made cameo appearances, playing inquisitive journalists. Holland stated that working with his brothers was one of the reasons he accepted the project.
Holland said, "LEGO offered me an opportunity to work with my family, and that's a proposal I found hard to refuse." Harry, meanwhile, recalled childhood memories of playing "Lego Indiana Jones" and "Lego Star Wars" games with his brother, often arguing over who got to play the Xbox. He noted that the introduction of cooperative modes officially kicked off their brotherly rivalry on the "LEGO battlefield." Sam emphasized that physical LEGO sets help people step away from screens and reconnect with one another.
In fact, Holland's passion for LEGO is well-documented. As far back as eight years ago, during an IGN interview, he recreated the bank robbery scene from "Spider-Man: Homecoming" using LEGO.
One of his most cherished memories is assembling the "LEGO Death Star" with his co-star Jacob Batalon, a moment he considers the beginning of their friendship and their Spider-Man journey. Holland chuckled, describing it as a "very beautiful and profound time."
