Andrzej Sapkowski, the original author of "The Witcher" series, recently stated in a Reddit AMA that he regrets casually mentioning the "School of the Wolf" detail in his early work, "The Last Wish."
While it was just a single line in the book, this concept was extensively expanded upon in CD Projekt RED's "The Witcher" game series, becoming one of the core elements of the franchise's world-building. Sapkowski explicitly called this expansion "completely unnecessary."
He noted that his initial mention of the "School of the Wolf" was "unworthy" and "narratively incorrect," later feeling it was detrimental to the plot, which is why he never brought it up again in subsequent works.
"But that one sentence was enough for adapters—especially game developers—to latch onto it and derive a whole bunch of so-called Witcher Schools, which was completely unnecessary," Sapkowski stated.

CDPR established at least seven schools in the games, including the Wolf, Cat, Griffin, Bear, Viper, Manticore, and Crane, with members of each school wearing a distinct medallion.
The first teaser for "The Witcher IV" even sparked fan discussions due to a new medallion, later confirmed to belong to the entirely new "School of the Lynx." For gamers, these "schools" have become almost as significant as Hogwarts houses, but Sapkowski, as the original author, clearly disagrees.
He even suggested that he is considering deleting the sentence about the "School of the Wolf" in future re-editions, effectively removing the related lore from the novel's canon. However, he also mentioned another possibility: expanding on the concept himself in subsequent works to bring the "schools" back to his envisioned version.
"Perhaps I will elaborate on the true meaning of the medallions and their connection to specific characters. There are many possibilities; the sky's the limit," Sapkowski remarked.
These comments come as the English edition of his new novel, "Crossroads of Ravens," is being released. The book is a standalone prequel, set decades before the main storyline and game events, depicting young Geralt's early adventures on the Witcher's path after his training at Kaer Morhen.
Meanwhile, "The Witcher" Season 4 is set to premiere on Netflix on October 30, 2025. Liam Hemsworth, who is taking over the role of Geralt from Henry Cavill, recently spoke about the pressure of the recasting and admitted to stepping away from social media due to intense online reactions.
Sapkowski's stance on the "Witcher Schools" once again highlights the divergence between the original novels and their game adaptations, leaving many curious whether he will personally retract or redefine this lore in the future.
