Michael Mann's upcoming sequel to "Heat," slated to begin filming next year, is expanding its star-studded cast. Deadline exclusively reported today that Christian Bale, who previously collaborated with Mann on "Public Enemies" years ago, is in talks to join the film in an undisclosed role.

"Heat 2" is reportedly assembling a luxurious ensemble. Leonardo DiCaprio is set to take over the role of Chris Shiherlis, originally played by Val Kilmer (who passed away from pneumonia in April this year) in the first film. Bradley Cooper is rumored to portray the new main antagonist, Otis Wardell, while Adam Driver will play a younger version of Robert De Niro's character. Austin Butler, long rumored to be joining, is still in negotiations for a role.

"Heat 2" is based on Mann's prequel/sequel novel published a few years ago. The story unfolds across two intertwined timelines: one set a day after the events of the first film, following Vincent Hanna (Al Pacino) as he continues his pursuit of the fugitive Chris Shiherlis (Val Kilmer's character); the other delves seven years prior to the original, chronicling other heists committed by Neil McCauley (De Niro's character), Shiherlis, and their crew, while Hanna is tracking a different fugitive. These seemingly disparate experiences ultimately lead to an unexpected, fated collision seven years later.
