While Daniel Craig's Detective Benoit Blanc is the central figure across the "Knives Out" franchise, he will have less screen time in the upcoming installment, "Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery." Audiences won't see Blanc until 40 minutes into the film.

Director Rian Johnson, who helms the series, explained this narrative choice in an interview with Total Film. "The murder mystery structure of this film is more traditional than the previous two. I mean, this is essentially the narrative model for most of Agatha Christie's novels. In the first act, you meet all the suspects, then the murder occurs, and finally, the detective appears. So, this is a return to form, and I thought it would be very interesting to do."

Johnson continued, "At the same time, the film's themes are also more complex—or perhaps not complex, but I really wanted to establish the tone and fully develop the character of Jode, including the significance of religion to him. So, I felt the first act should take its time to set the stage, not just introducing the suspects, but also establishing Jode's perspective. I think it's worth it. And I thought, if I could find an actor who could carry the first 40 minutes of the film without audiences asking, 'Wait, where's Daniel?', then I'd be all set."

Josh O'Connor plays the role of Jode in the film, and Johnson praised O'Connor's performance. "Josh is fantastic. In each film of this series—the first was Ana de Armas, the second was Janelle Monáe, and now this one is Josh—the protagonists aren't actually Blanc. The key is to create a character that audiences can immediately connect with. After seeing so much of Josh's previous work and witnessing his extensive range, plus, to be honest, ever since I met him, I thought, 'This is the person I want to work with on set.' I think audiences will be willing to go on this journey with him through the film."
