Yoshiki Tanaka's Agency Confirms "The Legend of the Galactic Heroes" Author Suffered Brain Hemorrhage a Year Ago, Continues Rehab with Hopes of Returning to Writing

Japanese sci-fi novelist Yoshiki Tanaka, renowned for masterpieces like "The Legend of the Galactic Heroes," "Soryuden," and "The Heroic Legend of Arslan," recently had his agency representative, Hiroaki Adachi, share some sobering news. Adachi revealed that a year ago, Tanaka-sensei suddenly collapsed due to a "brain hemorrhage" and was rushed to the hospital. He is now residing in a care facility, diligently undergoing rehabilitation. While he's currently unable to write, he hasn't given up on his passion and hopes to make a comeback once he recovers.

According to Adachi, though the announcement comes a year late, Tanaka-sensei suffered a "brain hemorrhage" on November 30, 2024. Thankfully (a true blessing in disguise), the incident occurred in a convenience store near his studio. The store clerk immediately called an ambulance, ensuring he received emergency medical attention without delay. Adachi reflected on the terrifying "what if": if Tanaka had collapsed alone in his studio, especially on a Saturday when the staff were off, the outcome could have been far worse.

However, the brain injury left lasting sequelae, affecting some of his mobility. His original studio, not being wheelchair-accessible, had to be cleared out, with tens of thousands of books packed away.

This summer, he moved into a specialized care facility where he receives professional care while continuing his rehabilitation. Though he appears calm on the surface (his inner thoughts remain a mystery, of course), his mental state is stable. He even motivates himself during rehab, saying, "I still have so much I want to write." He diligently fills notebooks with his writing every day, often inspiring his staff in the process.

Given the circumstances, new works are unlikely to be released in the short term, and book signings won't be possible. But as mentioned, the author himself has absolutely no intention of giving up on his comeback, so fans are asked for their understanding and patience as he recovers.

It's worth noting that Yoshiki Tanaka is 73 years old, and a brain hemorrhage is an incredibly dangerous condition at his age. It's truly fortunate that he received immediate medical attention. While there are still unfinished stories and plot threads waiting to be resolved, fans will likely have to wait until Tanaka-sensei's full recovery to see his future creations.
