Netflix Deems Warner Bros. Games "Relatively Small," Excludes From Valuation; "Hogwarts Legacy," "Mortal Kombat" IP Futures Spark Concern

Netflix's recent acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery for a staggering $82.7 billion has sent shockwaves through the entertainment industry, but one detail has particularly rattled the gaming community and investors: Warner Bros.' gaming division was "not included in any valuation" for the deal. This revelation immediately sparked widespread concern, especially regarding the future direction of major franchises like "Hogwarts Legacy," "Mortal Kombat," and the DC game series, which could face profound impacts.

Despite housing world-class studios like Rocksteady Studios (known for the "Batman: Arkham" series), Traveller’s Tales (the "LEGO" games), Avalanche Software (developer of "Hogwarts Legacy"), and NetherRealm (behind "Mortal Kombat"), and with "Hogwarts Legacy" alone generating billions in revenue, these studios and their IPs were deemed "not critical" in Netflix's acquisition model.

Netflix Co-CEO Greg Peters addressed these concerns during a briefing on the acquisition, acknowledging Warner Bros.' strong performance in the gaming sector. However, he stated that the gaming division was "relatively small in scale" compared to the overall deal and was "therefore not initially included in the valuation." Peters added that Netflix was "excited" about Warner Games' brands and technology and saw potential for future integration, but reiterated that "none of these were included in the transaction model."

The gaming industry is keenly watching how Netflix will manage Warner's extensive gaming assets. Netflix's own foray into gaming has seen mixed results, from aggressive developer recruitment to the closure of new studios. Its current strategy leans towards narrative-driven, children's, party, and ported games. Should the direction of Warner Games be altered, many beloved franchises could face restructuring, cutbacks, or even indefinite hiatus.

As the acquisition review continues, the future of Warner Bros. Games stands at a critical juncture. With Netflix having neither included the division in its valuation nor outlined specific plans, the industry awaits to see how this unprecedented Hollywood mega-merger will reshape the global gaming landscape.
