"Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend" Movie Set for Fall 2026 Release, "AoButa" Series Nears Its Grand Finale!

Written by Hajime Kamoshida and illustrated by Keiji Mizoguchi, the wildly popular light novel series "Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai" (Seishun Buta Yarō) recently aired its college arc, "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Christmas Present," as a TV anime this past July.

Right after the college arc wrapped up, the official team wasted no time announcing a new movie, "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend." Today (12/14), at an offline event, they revealed it's hitting Japanese theaters in Fall 2026 and dropped the first key visual!

The "Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai" light novel series actually concluded last year with its 15th volume. This upcoming film, titled "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend" after the final light novel volume, will serve as the grand finale for the entire anime series, following two TV seasons and three previous theatrical films (not including this 2026 release).

They also unveiled a teaser visual, featuring the tagline: "Find Touko Kirishima, Mai-senpai is in danger." This officially signals that the "AoButa" series is heading towards its ultimate conclusion!

Plot Summary:

"Actually, I am Touko Kirishima."

When those words were uttered, the mysterious, internet-famous superstar singer was revealed to be none other than national actress Mai Sakurajima, sending the live audience into an absolute frenzy.

This exact scene mirrored what Sakuta Azusagawa had dreamt on Christmas Eve.

On April 1st, Mai's sudden, shocking confession kicked off a chain of "impossible events" that had previously only existed in dreams, now manifesting one after another in reality. The SNS hashtag "#Yumemiru" (Dreaming), which could make dreams come true, has vanished.

As Sakuta's perception of reality begins to diverge, he receives a message from an alternate version of himself: "Stop Touko Kirishima before reality is completely rewritten."

To restore the rewritten world to its original state, Sakuta embarks on a journey to find Touko Kirishima. This is a story that transcends "Adolescence Syndrome."

The series has previously seen the 2019 film "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl," followed by the 2023 films "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out" and "Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid." With this final chapter returning to the big screen, fans will have the chance to bid farewell to the series in theaters and witness its ultimate conclusion.

Fans of the series can definitely look forward to future announcements from the official team! With the light novels concluding their decade-long run last year, and the anime set to wrap up next fall with this theatrical film, get ready for more exciting news to drop soon!
