Historically, few science fiction films have been nominated for "non-technical" categories at the Academy Awards, with only a handful of exceptions like "Avatar" and "Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope" ever making it into the Best Picture nominations. James Cameron, director of the "Avatar" franchise, has voiced strong dissatisfaction with this long-standing exclusionary trend.

The Canadian-born Cameron recently told Canadian outlet The Globe And Mail, "I don't really think about the Oscars' influence — and I deliberately don't think about it. I don't make movies to cater to their taste. They typically don't honor sci-fi films like 'Avatar'." He continued, "Another Canadian director, Denis Villeneuve, made two absolutely spectacular 'Dune' films, but those films seem to be considered self-generating, because he didn't get a Best Director nomination. You can make awards-season movies, or you can make the kind of movies I prefer — movies that audiences truly want to see."
