You might know Hana-Kimi (花ざかりの君たちへ), the manga series by Hisaya Nakajo, from its various live-action drama adaptations across different countries.
This January, a new TV anime adaptation premiered, bringing this classic work to life in animation for the very first time. The first episode, which aired yesterday (January 4), included a special memorial message after the main feature, dedicated to original author Hisaya Nakajo, who passed away in October 2023. The tribute brought many fans to tears.

Hana-Kimi (花ざかりの君たちへ) was serialized in Hakusensha's "Hana to Yume" magazine from 1996 to 2004, spanning 23 collected volumes. Its immense popularity led to multiple adaptations: a Taiwanese drama in 2006, two Japanese dramas in 2007 and 2011, and a Korean drama in 2012. All these remakes were well-received, a testament to the series' enduring appeal.

Hisaya Nakajo-sensei passed away in October 2023, and this anime marks the first time her work has been adapted into animation. The "Hana to Yume" editorial department stated: "The anime project had been slowly progressing for a long time, with discussions between the editorial team and Nakajo-sensei. She was very much looking forward to seeing the world of her work re-imagined in a way unique to animation, different from the manga, as she reviewed character designs and scripts."
The editorial department also admitted: "It's truly regrettable that we couldn't see the completed version with her. However, thanks to the passionate support of readers over many years, 'Hana-Kimi' can once again come to life in anime form, nearly 20 years after its conclusion. We are truly grateful." They also addressed fans, saying: "To live up to the expectations of Nakajo-sensei and our readers, the production team and editorial department will give their all. Please look forward to the broadcast!"

After the first episode aired, a memorial message appeared on screen:
"With deepest respect and gratitude to original author Hisaya Nakajo-sensei, and sincere prayers for her repose.
— The TV Anime 'Hana-Kimi' Production Committee"

This touching tribute immediately sparked an outpouring of emotional comments online. One fan wrote: "The production team really understood the sentiment by placing a memorial message for the original author at the end. While the work had been adapted into live-action dramas and became a social phenomenon, for an author, seeing their drawn characters move in an anime must be an irreplaceable joy. Sensei, it's been animated! The animation is wonderful, and the voice cast is superb. I truly wish you could have seen it with your own eyes."

Another fan commented: "The message for Nakajo-sensei at the end of the first episode made me burst into tears... Please always keep your respect and gratitude for her in your hearts, I beg you."

For many fans, Hana-Kimi isn't just a work; it's a cherished memory of their youth. This anime adaptation has become the most tender love letter to the original author. If you're curious about the new anime or already love the story of Hana-Kimi, be sure to add it to your watch list this season! Plus, the opening theme, "Adorena," is performed by the popular group YOASOBI!
