"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" Series Greenlit: Classic Nordic Mystery Gets Contemporary Retelling

UK pay-TV platform Sky has officially greenlit a new series adaptation, announcing it will produce an original series based on Stieg Larsson's global bestselling novel, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo."

Following its exclusive reveal by Variety, the news has garnered significant attention from the film and television industry and book fans alike, signaling the classic franchise, spanning novels and films, is set to return to the public eye in a new format.

The series will consist of eight episodes. Officials revealed the show will retain the spirit of the original's core characters and investigative narrative, but will not simply be a remake of existing adaptations. Instead, it will bring the story into a contemporary setting, re-examining themes of power, gender, media, and technological surveillance to create a more direct dialogue with today's world.

The original novel follows disgraced investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist, who teams up with brilliant hacker Lisbeth Salander to investigate a forty-year-old disappearance. This character pairing and hard-boiled narrative style have made the "Millennium" series one of the quintessential Nordic crime novels.

Furthermore, Sky emphasized in its official statement that the new series will be "rooted in the characters themselves and the investigative DNA," rather than relying on the sensationalism of a single mystery.

Production is slated to begin this spring in Lithuania. Upon completion, it will air on Sky platforms in the UK, Ireland, and several other European countries. Sony Pictures Television is handling international distribution and has already commenced pre-sales for the U.S. market, suggesting the series may expand to additional streaming platforms in the future.
