Chris Pratt Pitched Oprah Winfrey, Or Even an AI, to Play "Mercy" Villain

While Chris Pratt recently expressed his aversion to AI-generated virtual actors like Tilly Norwood potentially replacing human talent, it seems Pratt isn't entirely against using AI actors for suitable roles. During a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly (EW) while promoting his upcoming AI-themed sci-fi action film "Mercy," Pratt admitted he once suggested to the studio that the movie's AI judge villain be played by an actual AI actor.

Pratt recalled, "I remember we were talking about who could play these roles, and very early on, I suggested, 'Should we just make the judge an AI? What if we just create an AI ourselves?' And the response was, 'No, I don't think that's going to work.'"

Pratt continued, "And then I was like, 'Yeah, you're right, I don't think that's a good idea at all.' (laughs). Ultimately, when you consider the outcome and the choices you have to make, you realize it was never really a viable option. It's a collaborative process."

Pratt confessed, "It was a stupid idea, absolutely stupid. It just didn't make sense, and I'm glad we didn't do it. But another idea I pitched early in production was: What if [my character] could choose the judge's appearance? I could pick Oprah [Winfrey], or I could pick anyone I wanted, because it's ultimately just a face on a screen. And I thought it would be hilarious to have Oprah as the judge. But it's like when you watch deleted scenes and you think, 'Yeah, there was a good reason that was cut.'"

Pratt also expressed his delight that Rebecca Ferguson ultimately took on the role, praising her appearance as almost unrealistically beautiful, "almost like an AI."
