Deadline exclusively reported today that Craig Mazin, the acclaimed showrunner behind HBO's "Chernobyl" and the hugely successful live-action adaptation of "The Last of Us," is set to reunite with the network for another major video game IP: "Baldur's Gate." Unlike "The Last of Us," this new live-action series will not be a direct adaptation of the game's plot but will instead continue its narrative.

The upcoming series will pick up immediately after the events of "Baldur's Gate 3," effectively serving as a sequel rather than a traditional adaptation. This approach grants Mazin significant creative freedom over the number of seasons and the overall story arc, a departure from the "The Last of Us" series, which was constrained by the original game's progression.
In an intriguing development, the "Baldur's Gate" series is also slated to merge into a shared universe with Netflix's forthcoming live-action "Dungeons & Dragons" series, "The Forgotten Realms." The creators believe the expansive scope of the "Forgotten Realms" campaign setting within the game universe is vast enough to accommodate multiple interconnected series, making this crossover a natural fit.
