Last November, Universal Pictures surprised fans worldwide with a major announcement: Rachel Weisz and Brendan Fraser were in talks to reprise their roles for a fourth installment of "The Mummy" franchise. Today, Universal officially unveiled the film's release date, slated to hit the big screen on May 19, 2028.
Strictly speaking, this upcoming film will effectively serve as the true third entry in the series. Universal had previously indicated their intention for the plot to bypass the events of the third movie, instead connecting directly to the first two. This strategic decision likely explains why Weisz, the female lead from the initial two films, is returning, while Maria Bello, who took over her role in the third installment, will not be involved.

Universal had previously tapped Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, the directing duo behind "Scream" (2022) and "Scream VI," to helm the new "Mummy" film. David Coggeshall, co-writer of the "Scream" television series, is penning the screenplay.
Bettinelli-Olpin and Gillett recently shared with Empire magazine that after directing two "Scream" films, they established a high bar for any future franchise projects, requiring the script to be truly exceptional. They described Coggeshall's screenplay as "brilliant, epic, thrilling, and witty," which ultimately convinced them to take on the significant responsibility.
