AI Voice Acting Sparks Controversy: "Baldur's Gate 3" Star Slams Using AI for RPG Performance as "Stupid"

As generative AI technology increasingly permeates the film, television, and gaming industries, the debate over whether AI should replace human actors has become a central point of contention. Jennifer English, an actress known for her roles in "Baldur's Gate 3" and "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33," recently stated in a podcast interview that using AI to replace actors is not only unnecessary but also destroys the core value of role-playing games.

During an interview with Radio Times, Jennifer English, alongside fellow "Baldur's Gate 3" actor Samantha Béart and "The Witcher" protagonist Geralt's voice actor Doug Cockle, discussed AI's impact on the performance industry. English did not mince words, declaring:

"I don't want my art to be perfect; I absolutely don't want that." English then criticized the idea of some industry figures attempting to replace human creativity with AI, stating, "Honestly, I think the whole thing is a bit embarrassing and stupid. Don't replace humans with AI; that's just incredibly stupid."

English believes that RPGs like "Baldur's Gate 3" or "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" resonate with players precisely because of the emotions and experiences invested by creators and actors.

"These games are loved by so many people because we inject our own stories and humanity into them," English explained. She highlighted that the moving narrative of "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" stems from the creators' real experiences and emotions. "That wasn't made by AI; that was their lives and their history."

"Once we take away these human elements, what's left? Only shame," English asserted.

Notably, "Clair Obscur: Expedition 33" briefly utilized generative AI for some background textures during its development, though this content was later removed in a post-launch update. The incident sparked controversy at the time and even impacted the game's consideration for some annual awards.

In response to the potential impact of AI on acting careers, the American actors' union SAG-AFTRA has been in ongoing negotiations with film and game companies in recent years, seeking to establish clearer guidelines for AI usage.

Separately, a producer from the "Divinity" series warned that even using AI for "unimportant lines" could affect opportunities for new actors. He stated, "Every voice actor starts with small roles, and if those opportunities disappear, the future of the entire industry will be impacted."
