It's a common sight at awards ceremonies for recipients to have their acceptance speeches timed, often leading to them being played off by music when they exceed the allotted duration. However, at the recent 98th Academy Awards, the songwriting team behind "Kpop Demon Hunters" was accepting the award for Best Original Song when they were rushed off the stage before the second speaker even had a chance to begin. Viewers noted the clear disappointment on the winners' faces, and the broadcast segment quickly sparked widespread backlash online, with many criticizing the show's producers as "heartless."

Addressing the controversy, Rob Mills, Executive Vice President of Walt Disney Television, spoke with Variety on Monday. He stated that a key discussion point during the post-mortem for next year's ceremony would be how to manage acceptance speeches. Mills noted the challenge of multiple winners taking the stage, making it difficult to allocate sufficient time for everyone. He suggested re-evaluating options, such as designating a single speaker or allowing winners to finish their remarks backstage, potentially livestreamed on social media.

Mills further elaborated that they would thoroughly explore all solutions to find the best approach, acknowledging the difficulty of cutting off someone's only opportunity to speak. He mentioned that the issue of fixed speaking times had also been discussed at the nominees' luncheon. While he didn't have an immediate solution, he emphasized that it was a problem requiring serious consideration.
