Last year, fans went wild when it was announced that the fourth season of the "A Certain Scientific Railgun" anime, a spinoff of the "A Certain Magical Index" light novel series, was confirmed for production. But that wasn't all – a TV anime adaptation for the series spinoff, "A Certain Scientific Dark Side" (とある暗部の少女共棲), was also revealed!
Fast forward to today (March 27), and we've got even bigger news: "A Certain Scientific Dark Side" is officially set to drop in Fall 2026! To amp up the hype, they've also unleashed an explosive teaser PV and fresh character designs for the main cast.
So, what's "A Certain Scientific Dark Side" (とある暗部の少女共棲) all about? It's the newest spinoff novel in the "A Certain Magical Index" universe, kicking off in March 2023. The story dives deep into "ITEM," Academy City's shadowy elite squad of four super-powered girls, with their formidable leader, Shizuri Mugino, at the forefront. The Japanese edition currently boasts six volumes.
The dream team is back! J.C.STAFF, the studio behind the long-running "A Certain Magical Index" series, is once again at the helm for production. And get this: Tatsuyuki Nagai, the genius director who brought us "A Certain Scientific Railgun," is returning to direct! Character designs are in the capable hands of Shigeki Kimoto.
▼ Shizuri Mugino (CV: Ami Koshimizu)
▼ Frenda Seivelun (CV: Maaya Uchida)
▼ Rikou Takitsubo (CV: Aya Suzaki)
▼ Kinuhata Saiai (CV: Chinatsu Akasaki)
▼ Choumi Hanano (CV: ???)
The newly released PV is a masterclass in contrast, juxtaposing Academy City's seemingly peaceful facade with the dangerous undercurrents lurking beneath. We get glimpses of their everyday lives, but then BAM! It cuts to them tackling high-stakes missions, creating an atmosphere that's both nail-bitingly tense and surprisingly relatable.
