The beloved light novel series Rascal Does Not Dream of... (Seishun Buta Yarou) is gearing up for its grand anime finale after last year's theatrical release of the university arc, Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid.
During a stage event at Anime Japan 2026 on March 29, it was officially announced that the final chapter, the feature film Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend, will hit theaters on October 16, 2026. A brand-new trailer dropped alongside the news, as well as the first in a series of "Finale Commemorative" character visuals, this one featuring Sakuta Azusagawa's childhood friend, Rio Futaba.

The Rascal Does Not Dream of... light novel series officially concluded in 2024 with its 15th volume. This upcoming film adapts that final volume, bringing the entire saga—spanning a TV series and multiple movies—to a definitive close.

Synopsis for Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dear Friend:
"The truth is, I'm Touko Kirishima."
With those words, the mysterious and wildly popular internet singer is revealed to be none other than superstar actress Mai Sakurajima, sending the crowd into a frenzy.
And for Sakuta Azusagawa, it's the exact scene he witnessed in a dream on Christmas Eve.
Mai's shocking confession on April 1st is just the beginning. "Impossible events" once confined to dreams start bleeding into reality. The social media tag "#yumemiru" (#dreaming), which could make dreams come true, has vanished.
As the world around him warps, Sakuta receives a message from another version of himself in a parallel world: "You have to stop Touko Kirishima before reality is completely rewritten."
To pull the world back from the brink, Sakuta sets off to find Touko Kirishima in a story that transcends the bounds of "Puberty Syndrome."

The first "Finale Commemorative" visual spotlights Sakuta's close friend, Rio Futaba, with the tagline: "I'm not actually alone." The stunning, atmospheric art has fans buzzing, with many passionately declaring, "Rio is the one true love!" and "Rio is the best!"
To keep the hype train rolling, the studio also announced that new character visuals will be released every Sunday evening, counting down with fans all the way to the premiere.

The series has had a strong theatrical presence, from 2019's Rascal Does Not Dream of a Dreaming Girl to the 2023 double-feature of Rascal Does Not Dream of a Sister Venturing Out and Rascal Does Not Dream of a Knapsack Kid. Bringing the final chapter back to the big screen gives fans the perfect venue to say goodbye and witness the ultimate conclusion.
With the light novel's decade-long run having ended last year, the anime adaptation is now set to reach its own epic finale this year.
