Karl Urban, known for his roles in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "The Boys," recently expressed a strong desire to star in a "Red Dead Redemption" film adaptation, specifically naming John Marston as the character he'd like to portray. His comments have reignited discussions about a potential movie based on the beloved game series.

In a recent interview with Square Mile, Karl Urban was asked about video game adaptations he'd be interested in joining. He stated that "Red Dead Redemption" is one of his favorite games, adding that he hasn't had many opportunities to delve into gaming culture in the past.
Urban explained that when game consoles first became popular in 1994, he was an unemployed actor living in Sydney and couldn't afford a console. By the time he could afford one, his busy filming schedule around the world prevented him from ever truly diving deep into gaming.
Despite this, Karl Urban noted that whenever he did get a chance to play games, "Red Dead Redemption" always captivated him. He emphatically stated, "Come on, it's John Marston! I would love to play that character."

John Marston is the protagonist of the 2010 "Red Dead Redemption" and a pivotal character in "Red Dead Redemption 2." His backstory as a former outlaw, forced by the federal government to hunt down his old gang members while trying to protect his family and escape his violent past, has made him a fan favorite.
However, despite Karl Urban's expressed interest, the likelihood of a film adaptation remains low. Developer Rockstar Games and its parent company Take-Two Interactive have long maintained a conservative stance on screen adaptations. Rockstar co-founder Dan Houser stated in 2024 that a "Grand Theft Auto" film adaptation "never made sense" and believed such an endeavor would carry significant risks.
Houser explained that film production is often Hollywood-driven, making it difficult for game companies to control the creative direction. Coupled with the inconsistent quality of past video game adaptations, Rockstar has consistently kept its distance from such collaborations. Nevertheless, as more Hollywood actors publicly express their interest, the topic of a "Red Dead Redemption" film continues to garner attention.
