This year marks the 40th anniversary of the original "Top Gun" film starring Tom Cruise. Distributor Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media recently announced at CinemaCon that Cruise would return for a third installment, and also revealed a double feature screening of the first two films would kick off next month. Meanwhile, news regarding the director for the third film has begun to surface, with all signs pointing to Paramount and Skydance seeking a new helmer.

Puck News recently reported that franchise producer Jerry Bruckheimer has reportedly accepted that Joseph Kosinski, director of the blockbuster sequel "Top Gun: Maverick," is unlikely to return to direct. Kosinski's schedule is currently packed, as he is set to develop a new "Miami Vice" film and direct an untitled UFO thriller for Apple, making him unavailable for "Top Gun 3" in the near future.

Rumors also suggest that Christopher McQuarrie, director of "Mission: Impossible" installments 5, 6, 7, and 8, is currently the frontrunner to helm the third "Top Gun" film. He has become Cruise's most trusted collaborator in recent years, with involvement in nearly all of the actor's projects. However, Bruckheimer and Paramount Pictures and Skydance Media are reportedly not ruling out other directors and are actively engaging with additional potential candidates.
