The "Thor" franchise has spanned four films to date, with three installments helmed by different directors, each bringing a distinct style. After the comedic shift in the third and fourth movies, many fans are now nostalgic for the more serious tone of the original, even hoping for Kenneth Branagh, who directed the first film, to return for a fifth. As it turns out, it's not just the fans—Branagh himself has been eager to return to the franchise ever since completing the first movie.

While recently promoting his latest film, Branagh admitted to Business Insider that he had wanted to direct the sequel but was physically unable to at the time. "I was definitely ready to do another one, that's for sure, but not immediately," he explained. "The Marvel period was a very high-pressure time. The whole production was a high-pressure time. It was exciting, but it was very high-pressure, and I definitely needed to decompress. Kevin Feige was very understanding of that, and so were the actors. I really needed a holiday."

Branagh confirmed that Marvel did invite him to direct the second film. "There was an invitation, for sure, and it was a pleasant one to receive, but they were disappointed when I didn't take them up on it. They understood, but they were disappointed," he said. "They wanted to get on with the next one straight away, which was a perfectly reasonable consideration, but I said to Kevin at the time, 'I don't have the energy.'"

While his return isn't guaranteed, Branagh already has some ideas for the future of the "Thor" series. "Deep down, I'd love to bring some closure to that character," he shared. "I've always wanted to continue telling his story and I certainly have some ideas. And those ideas are very much in the area of James Mangold's brilliant work on 'Logan.' I hope to see Chris Hemsworth and the other actors have their own final chapter, allowing Thor to enter his twilight years in a blaze of glory."
