Russo Brothers: "Avengers" Directors Say Spoilers Are "Harder Than Ever" to Prevent — Blame Audience Anxiety, Delayed Viewing

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has long been celebrated for its surprising Easter eggs, cameos, and unexpected plot connections. Consequently, Marvel Studios often urges viewers to strictly guard against leaks and avoid spoiling the experience for those who haven't yet seen the films. However, with increasingly advanced technology and the rapid flow of information online, Marvel's efforts to prevent plot leaks have become significantly more challenging.

Despite the escalating difficulty of maintaining secrecy, Angela Russo (pictured left below), producer and sister to "Avengers" directors the Russo Brothers (who famously helmed "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers: Endgame," and are set to direct the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday" and "Avengers: Secret Wars"), recently assured Metro in an interview that the production team she leads with her brothers consistently strives to devise promotional strategies that build maximum fan anticipation while exercising self-restraint to avoid excessive spoilers, ultimately delivering unexpected surprises to their audience.

Angela stated, "We handle those plot twists very carefully, especially when preventing certain twists from spoiling others. We take this very seriously and are committed to protecting the integrity of the viewing experience, ensuring everyone can enjoy it in the same way."

Joe Russo (pictured right above), one half of the directing duo, added, "On one hand, audiences crave surprises, and that's one of the exciting aspects of the theatrical experience. But on the other hand, spoiler prevention can become overly restrictive, leading people to feel anxious about any movie they watch. We meticulously design how these films unfold their narratives, and we hope audiences receive the emotions we intend, according to our plan. However, at the same time, you can't control everything. You have to focus on creating rewatchable works that can transcend the initial surprise of the first viewing."

Angela also noted that modern viewing habits for films and TV series have changed significantly. People no longer necessarily watch at scheduled release or broadcast times; the freedom to choose when to watch has become very high. This, in turn, increases the likelihood of later viewers encountering spoilers. Furthermore, contemporary audiences have so many titles to follow that the standard for how quickly one catches up to a trending work varies widely.

Angela also revealed that even within AGBO, the production company she runs with her brothers, not everyone is privy to the full spoiler details of unreleased Marvel films. "We implement strict secrecy measures within our company. Only a select few truly understand the various situations that Anthony [Russo, her brother] and Joe are aware of. We might think we're in on a secret, but we could actually be mistaken! Interestingly, there are also some people who, despite being in a position to know, prefer not to. They'll say, 'No thanks, I'd rather stay in the dark!'"
