The iconic RPG series Dragon Quest is gearing up for its 40th anniversary this year, remaining one of SQUARE ENIX's flagship franchises. Fans are buzzing with anticipation, wondering what surprises the developers have in store for this major milestone.
Series creator Yuji Horii recently dropped a bombshell during "Yubo and Mashirito's KosoKoso Broadcast Station," a show he co-hosts with Kazuhiko Torishima. Horii announced a special livestream set for May 27, 2026 – "Dragon Quest Day" – where he teased that news about "the next title" would be revealed. Naturally, fans are absolutely hyped!
"While I can't spill the beans on what the next title is just yet, there will be a lot of new information, so please look forward to it," Horii stated.
Dragon Quest Day, celebrated annually on May 27th, is almost always a date for major series announcements. Last year, for example, we got the release date for "Dragon Quest I & II HD-2D Remake."
And who could forget the 35th-anniversary livestream in 2021? That event unleashed a torrent of new game reveals, including "Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate," "Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake," and the spin-off "Dragon Quest Treasures," starring "Dragon Quest XI's" siblings, Erik and Mia.
Among these, the game that has kept players on the edge of their seats is undoubtedly "Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate." Revealed way back in 2021, it's been radio silence ever since. Could this finally be our moment for an update?
Five years have passed since its announcement, with virtually no new details shared by the official channels. The only tidbits we got back then were promises of an overhauled traditional command battle system and a darker, more mature tone for the game.
While the exact contents of this 40th-anniversary livestream remain a mystery, Horii's direct mention of "the next title" has ignited a firestorm of speculation. Many players are now crossing their fingers, hoping this means we're finally getting some long-awaited progress on "Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate." Get ready for whatever surprises await!
