The "First Blood" prequel, "John Rambo," which stars "The Recruit" actor Noah Centineo, has announced a surprising new addition to its cast: James Franco. Variety exclusively reported that Franco will portray a minor villain in the film.

Franco largely disappeared from mainstream Hollywood productions after a series of sexual misconduct allegations surfaced in 2017. He later reached settlements with his accusers and pivoted to low-budget independent films to rebuild his career. "John Rambo" marks his first return to a major studio production since then. Franco recently teased at the Cannes Film Festival that he had secretly wrapped a big-budget studio film, expected to be released next year, which is likely this project.

In addition to Franco and Centineo, David Harbour, known for his role as Chief Hopper in "Stranger Things," has also joined the cast. He is set to portray Colonel Trautman, a pivotal supporting character from the original "First Blood" series.

"John Rambo" will be directed by Finnish filmmaker Jalmari Helander, known for "Big Game" and "Sisu." The screenplay is penned by Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani, the writing duo behind "Black Adam." The film will explore the origins and experiences of a young John Rambo during the Vietnam War.

While original "Rambo" star Sylvester Stallone was not initially involved in the production, he later agreed to return and will be credited as a co-producer alongside "Avengers" franchise directors, the Russo Brothers.
