Action maestro Michael Bay was rumored last year to be returning to direct a new installment in the "Transformers" franchise for Paramount/Skydance. However, it appears that plan is now on hold. Bay has instead shifted his focus to Universal Pictures, where he is developing a true-story military action film. This project marks Bay's return to the true-story military genre, following his 2016 film "13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi".

The subject Universal and Bay have zeroed in on is "Operation Epic Fury," the US and Israeli airstrikes launched against Iran earlier this year. The film will primarily focus on the subsequent rescue mission, detailing the harrowing ordeal of two fighter pilots shot down behind enemy lines and their successful extraction. This experience is set to be adapted into a book, slated for publication next year, and the film will be directly based on it. Its release, however, is unlikely to make it by next year, pushing it back to at least the year after.
