New "Resident Evil" Film Sparks Fan Debate Over Lack of Leon, Nemesis; Director Zach Cregger Responds to Criticism

The first teaser trailer for the new live-action "Resident Evil" film, directed by Zach Cregger, known for "Barbarian" and "Weapons," has ignited a polarized reaction within the gaming community. Fans are debating the film's story and character choices, which appear to deviate from the original game series. Cregger has acknowledged the fan criticism but remains confident that an original story is the right approach.

In a recent interview with Interview Magazine, Cregger expressed his satisfaction with the completed film but admitted surprise at the online discourse following the trailer's release. He noted that many players anticipate seeing familiar characters and storylines from the games, making it difficult for some audiences to accept any different content.

The initial teaser features a new character frantically navigating a zombie-infested, snow-covered Raccoon City. Notably absent are iconic elements like Leon S. Kennedy, Nemesis, or Lickers. Instead, the trailer showcases new monsters and only a few subtle nods to Capcom's original work, leading some fans to worry the film might stray too far from the franchise's core.

However, Cregger stated that he has no regrets about depicting the T-virus-ravaged world from a fresh perspective.

"But if I did that, I don't think I'd be creatively fulfilled, and I don't even think they would enjoy it," he said. "If I just did the story of the games, I think the most diehard fans would be bummed."

Cregger's established reputation as a horror filmmaker, built on the success of "Barbarian" and "Weapons," has led some viewers to anticipate his fresh take on "Resident Evil." Whether this original narrative will win over existing players remains to be seen when the film hits theaters on September 18, 2026.
