"Kamiina Botan, Drunken State as a Lily" Body Pillow Release Sparks Fan Outcry: "Yuri Works Shouldn't Have This!"

The anime adaptation of manga artist Hei's work, "Kamiina Botan, Drunken State as a Lily," which began airing in April, has garnered a significant fanbase. Praised for its slice-of-life portrayal of "girls drinking" and themes of female relationships, the series has seen a surge in attention since its anime debut.

However, a recent collaboration between the official anime team and Movic to release body pillow covers featuring characters Kamiina Botan and Tonami Ibuki has unexpectedly sparked a backlash from some fans. The controversy stems from the belief that a Yuri series shouldn't be releasing merchandise that is "clearly aimed at a male audience," making it a hot topic online.

Given the premise of "Kamiina Botan, Drunken State as a Lily," which centers on the daily lives of college women, their experiences with alcohol, and how drinking influences their unique atmosphere and relationships, the series naturally appeals to a specific demographic.

As a Yuri-oriented work, it primarily attracts female fans, though it certainly has male admirers too. So, the decision to release body pillow covers isn't entirely out of left field.

Nonetheless, body pillow covers are indeed often associated with male-oriented merchandise. One fan commented on the official post, stating, "Please don't sell this kind of product for a Yuri anime..."

Another fan insisted that these should be exclusive to female buyers, declaring that it's "out" for men to purchase them and pleading with the creators not to sell to male customers.

Some even argued that it's simply unacceptable for a man to "sleep" with a character from a Yuri work, calling the idea intolerable.

This type of merchandise definitely caught many Yuri fans by surprise, leaving them curious why the official team would push a product with such strong male-oriented connotations. Yet, some rational voices suggested that since there are many similar products on the market, they hoped this one would fully leverage its unique charm.

One humorous take envisioned buying the pillow so the two characters could "sleep" in the bed together, while the owner sleeps on the floor.

Other fans felt they simply couldn't bring themselves to buy it, explaining that since the two characters belong together, purchasing the pillow would feel like "intervening" and induce guilt.

Whether this type of merchandise is truly suitable for the series, the official team likely has their own considerations and reasoning. However, it remains to be seen if fan dissatisfaction will necessitate a response, or if sales figures will ultimately tell the tale.
