Tom Holland recently discussed juggling two major film projects, "The Odyssey" and "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," which initially presented a scheduling conflict. He would have had to choose one, as his commitment to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the next Spider-Man film was paramount.

In a recent interview with GQ magazine, Holland recalled receiving a personal call from director Christopher Nolan, offering him a role in "The Odyssey." Holland's response was direct: "I told Chris, 'Look, I'd love to do this movie, but if I do, I'm going to have to call Sony and have a very awkward conversation with them.'"

Holland subsequently approached Sony Pictures Chairman Tom Rothman directly, requesting a delay for "Brand New Day." To his surprise, Rothman readily agreed. Holland speculated on Sony's willingness, stating, "I think one of the reasons Sony was happy to delay is that Chris [Nolan] is known for his approach of 'this movie won't go over five months, and we're not going to take up Tom's [Holland's] next two years.' With other directors, the situation might have been entirely different." Ultimately, "The Odyssey" began filming precisely as Nolan promised and even wrapped nine days ahead of schedule.

Holland also asserted that the delay indirectly improved the production quality of "Brand New Day." He explained, "'The Odyssey' practically saved 'Brand New Day,' because we wouldn't have been able to get Destin [Daniel Cretton, the director of 'Brand New Day'] to helm it. And when we were originally supposed to start, he probably wasn't ready to direct the film yet. We also wouldn't have had six months to refine the script with Destin to its current standard. I genuinely believe we've made the best Spider-Man movie to date. So, while it was a difficult pill for Sony to swallow, I think in hindsight, they're incredibly grateful for the delay."

Holland further noted that Nolan's commitment to thorough preparation before filming inspired him to rally the entire "Brand New Day" team. He urged them to emulate Nolan's approach, emphasizing the importance of never improvising haphazardly on set. Instead, he stressed the need to understand the true meaning behind making "Brand New Day," ensuring it wouldn't be just another sequel made solely for profit.
