Fans who have been closely tracking the Marvel Cinematic Universe know that a solo project for the superhero Nova has been in the works at Marvel Studios for years. After a lengthy development period as a Disney+ series, which saw multiple writer changes and debate over the format, a decision has reportedly been made. According to a new exclusive from Deadline, Marvel is now shifting gears to develop "Nova" as a feature film with a new writer taking the helm.

Deadline reveals that Michael Waldron (pictured above), who previously penned the first season of "Loki" and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" for Marvel, is set to write the script for "Nova." He takes over from previous writers attached during the project's series phase, including "Criminal Minds" showrunner Ed Bernero and Sabir Pirzada, who co-wrote on "Ms. Marvel" and "Moon Knight."
While news of Waldron's involvement had been circulating in smaller media circles last week, the story has now been confirmed by the major trade publication. Deadline adds that if development proceeds smoothly, Waldron could potentially step into the director's chair for the film as well.

In the comics, the mantle of Nova has been passed down to more than one character. The series was originally set to focus on the Richard Rider version: an ordinary high school student who is randomly chosen by Rhomann Dey, a member of the intergalactic military force known as the Nova Corps, to inherit his powers. Rider becomes a new hero protecting Earth and the universe, with his major adversary being Annihilus. It remains unknown whether the feature film will retain these concepts.
