The recently announced 2027 anime adaptation of Nene Ayatsuki's manga, Mii-chan and Yamada-san, has been hit with a wave of criticism due to its sensitive subject matter, which involves intellectual disabilities and the sex work industry. Many online critics have expressed concern that the anime could deepen social prejudice against individuals with intellectual disabilities, leading to significant backlash.
The controversy has even prompted a petition calling for the halt of the anime's production. In response to the widespread discussion, the official anime X (formerly Twitter) account issued a formal statement on the 27th to address the concerns.

The manga "Mii-chan and Yamada-san" began its serialization on Kodansha's official manga app, Magazine Pocket, in September 2024. It quickly gained immense popularity on social media, and with only six volumes published, it has already sold over 2.8 million copies.
Set in Shinjuku's Kabukicho district in 2012, the story follows a year in the lives of Yamada Mami, a seasoned hostess working in the nightlife scene, and Miko Nakamura (Mii-chan), a newcomer who always seems to be "just a little bit off" in everything she does.
Although Mii-chan is cheerful and full of motivation, she struggles with reading kanji and picking up on social cues, often leading to her being ridiculed and labeled as "pitiful." However, Yamada finds herself drawn to Mii-chan's hardworking and resilient spirit. Despite its cute and heartwarming art style, the work starkly contrasts this by unflinchingly depicting themes of untethered loneliness, harsh reality, and the struggles faced by those on the fringes of society.

A petition on the platform Voice has already gathered approximately 1,650 signatures. Opponents generally argue that the story's depiction of an individual with an intellectual disability being exploited in the sex industry could have a negative impact, and they are urging the production committee to reconsider the adaptation.

The production committee addressed the issue in a statement titled "Regarding the Anime Adaptation of 'Mii-chan and Yamada-san'":
"The production committee sincerely acknowledges and takes seriously the various concerns and opinions raised regarding the work's content and its screen adaptation following the anime announcement."
The statement also explained the decision to adapt the manga, stating: "We believe this work has value and significance that merits an animated adaptation."
The committee further elaborated: "We will respect the themes and messages conveyed by the original work and strive to avoid creating prejudice or misunderstanding. During production, we will consult with relevant experts, implement appropriate rating systems, and include content warnings as we proceed with the anime's creation with the utmost caution."
They concluded with a message to fans: "We ask for your continued support for 'Mii-chan and Yamada-san'."
Simultaneously, the official X account for the manga also posted a statement:
"Thank you for your continued support of 'Mii-chan and Yamada-san.' This work was not created with the intention of discriminating against or demeaning any specific disability, group, or individual."
"For the anime production, the original author and the entire production team will continue to cherish the themes of the source material. Under the supervision and guidance of experts in relevant fields and appropriate professional organizations, we will present the content with even greater care and sensitivity through measures such as proper rating systems and content warnings. We ask for your continued support for 'Mii-chan and Yamada-san'."

Notably, "Mii-chan and Yamada-san" ranked 4th in the men's category of the "Kono Manga ga Sugoi! 2026" awards. The title frequently trends in the top ten on Japanese social media whenever a new chapter is released, maintaining a remarkable level of discussion. The original author has also announced that the manga will conclude with its seventh volume, with the story now entering its final arc. The anime announcement comes at a pivotal moment as many readers are eagerly following the characters' ultimate fates.

However, because the series deals with sensitive topics like hostess culture and marginalized communities, the anime announcement immediately ignited a fierce debate online, prompting the official statements emphasizing a cautious production approach.
Many supporters have also spoken out in defense of the work, arguing that "Mii-chan and Yamada-san" aims to highlight the reality of inadequate social support for vulnerable groups, rather than intentionally creating stereotypes or discriminating against anyone.
Public opinion on the anime adaptation is now sharply polarized. One side worries about the potential for misunderstanding and prejudice, while the other champions creative freedom, believing the story's raw and heavy narrative is precisely what draws societal attention to these important issues.
