The Captain Tsubasa saga is still going strong with sequel manga decades after its debut. In January 2024, creator Yoichi Takahashi announced that declining stamina and changes to his working environment had made it increasingly difficult to continue producing fully illustrated chapters. The latest installment, Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun FINALS, instead began updating on Captain Tsubasa WORLD and YanJan! in a pencil-drawn storyboard format. The series then went on hiatus after reaching Chapter 100 in May 2026.
On September 29, the official team announced that serialization will resume across its online platforms on October 6, ending a break of roughly four months. The story is also heading toward the climax of the Madrid Olympics.
The official X account shared a notice announcing the return of Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun FINALS: “Thank you, as always, for your continued support and readership. Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun FINALS took a short break after reaching the milestone of Chapter 100, but serialization will resume on October 6.”
The team also addressed readers who had been eagerly awaiting the series’ return: “Thank you for your patience. Beginning with Chapter 101, new installments will continue to be released every Tuesday, just as before.” The announcement added: “As the story approaches the climax of the Madrid Olympics, we hope you enjoy the new developments and the steadily rising tension. Thank you for your continued support of Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun FINALS.”
The story is currently deep into the fiercely contested Madrid Olympics semifinal. Japan’s U-23 national team, led by Tsubasa Ozora, is battling Spain, whose title charge is spearheaded by the player known as the “Angel,” Michael. With the match now in its second half, the big question is which team will survive and secure a place in the final.
Chapter 50 also generated plenty of buzz among fans when Tsubasa’s wife, Sanae Ozora, gave birth to twin boys.
Some readers may have lost track of whether the series was still running, but its continued publication makes Yoichi Takahashi’s passion for completing the story abundantly clear. Now that Captain Tsubasa: Rising Sun FINALS is returning, the long-running classic is ready to push the Olympic arc toward its biggest showdown yet.
